Donkeys
Donkeys is the second of three film concept ‘Advance Party’ devised by Sigma Films and Zentropa, a long-term partnership famed for Oscar nominees and Cannes winners. The first film, Red Road, was directed by Oscar and Cannes Jury Prize winner Andrea Arnold. Donkeys is a glorious successor to its lauded forebear, daring to depart from the rigorous doom-laden fare synonymous with Scotland and turn that black heart inside out. Each ‘Advance Party’ film shares a cast and characters re- imagined in different stories, putting great demands on the exceptional actors. James Cosmo is spot-on authentic as a Glaswegian lovable rogue. Martin Compston, alternately tender and tough, is perfectly pitched as the troubled but ultimately triumphant Stevie.
Synopsis
The only person not to have grown tired of Alfred’s wildly eccentric, self-centred approach to life is long-suffering pal, Brian. Alfred is taking Brian to Spain to eat fry- ups and sip cocktails as their suns set. First, however, there is the small matter of making everything “nicey-nicey” before they hit the beach.
Alfred is 63, and trails behind him a string of disastrous relationships: an estranged lover, an alienated daughter, and an illegitimate son. His well-meant but, ultimately ridiculous attempts to set things straight are charming, profoundly touching and always hilarious.
Life unravels in ways even Alfred could not predict and he has to act fast if he is to bring his family back together. Nothing is more surprising than the truth.
